How long have you tried waiting?
'Mounting' a RISC OS format drive can take about 2minutes, AIUI the long
time is due to the map being fetched a sector at a time, so if you need to
wait for the system to 'time out' for each sector you could have a long
loang wait, overnight?

When we have formated 40 & 80GB USB drives all? of them may have been
of no formated, i.e. as supplied from the factory! I don't know if a
particular format could upset it
Martin's suggestion of rmkill DOSFS sounds a good candidate!
