[iyonix-support] USB hardware (?) problem.

This is with a Panther running 5.13.

I got a considerable shock a couple of days ago when the machine
couldn't see the mouse at start-up. The set-up was:

  1) Keyboard plugged into the USB rear socket further from the
     side of the machine.

  2) The other rear socket connected to a hub, supplying mouse,
printer (via a USB to parallel cable) and Zip drive.

  3) A scanner connected to one of the sockets on the side, and
the other side socket has never worked.

After a lot of head-scratching I realised that the printer and
zip-drive weren't on the icon bar, and connecting the hub, minus Zip
drive (which I now virtually never use) and adding the scanner, to the
side port brought everything back to life, much to my relief.

Presumably the rear socket has physically failed in some way. Now, I
was told that connecting the non-working side socket would be
reasonably easy, and I wonder if the same might apply to the rear
socket too. However, I am the sort of person who used to come out in a
cold sweat when changing ROMs on an Archimedes and on doing the
StrongARM upgrade on a RISC PC, so I tend to be loth to delve into the
machine unless it's absolutely necessary. Also, I'm not known for
manual dexterity.

Can anyone give me any hints as to what I should do, and what I should
be particularly careful not to do? Alternatively, is there anyone in
Gloucestershire or thereabouts who would, for a reasonable fee, come
and look at the machine for me? I'm sure this doesn't come within the
remit of the technical help scheme of the ARM Club, which I've just
rejoined.

TIA,

With best wishes,

Peter.
