True, but it should certainly work with RISC OS format, too.

This is a red herring. What difference would it make if there was? 
RISC OS shows 123MB of free space on that device, so it sees some 
partition and that partition causes problems, so there is no need to 
care about any others.

My guess is that the device was formatted with the wrong parameters. 
It looks a bit like it was formatted to "Old" map format.
