But I have tried reformatting an 64 MB drive with files with both short
(multiple directories) and real-life filenames up to 50 and 361 files
respectively with no apparent problems.

This is at the 'initialise' level, not the 'deep' one, and which I would
expect to show such problems if that were the cause.

BTW, with native format, ROFS gives a divide-by-zero error before
displaying nothing (rather than 'disc empty).
