[iyonix-support] Re: Tex and Latex on RISC OS

Hi,

I have just generated a Tex file from TechWriter (I have the most up to
date version).
[...]
However when I emailed the original Tex file to a friend he could not get
in and edit it.
I suspect this is because he actually wants a Latex file.

Yes, Techwriter-generated .tex files are hardly editable, unlike LateX files.

[...]
Second Question:
How do I provide him with a Latex file that he can edit ?
(I'm hoping I can convert the Tex file to a Latex one)

AFAIK, the techwriter-generated .tex output file will give a
reasonably faithful rendering of the original document but it will
have lost the structures (chapters, sections, subsections, itemise
etc.) that would be needed to make a clean LateX file. So I would
definitely not try to convert tex->LateX.

A likely possible solution (I haven't tried it yet) should be using
the html output of Techwriter (which is easily editable and keeps
quite a lot of the internal structures) and then use html2latex (see
http://html2latex.sourceforge.net) to make a clean LateX file. Then
the LateX user will be able to edit it and combine it with his
preferred (or required) style file.

(Please, please don't tell me I have to use an alternative computing
platform.....)

hmm... html2latex runs with linux but it is probably possible to run
it on other operating systems. Anyway you may send your friend the
html file and let him sort out the html2latex issue :-)

In addition, you may extract the math formulas from the .tex file and
send them, otherwise the math formulas in the TW-generated html file
will appear as .gif files (not very nice and not practical to edit, to
say the least).

I believe a latex output should be far more desirable than a tex
output on TechWriter, but I don't know if this is technically or
economically feasible.
