[iyonix-support] Tex and Latex on RISC OS

To Martin Hansen:

I don't know Tex or Latex, but I know someone who does, and he used it
to generate his master's thesis on a RISC PC.

He comments as follows:

"LaTeX is quite a different beast to TeX (probably more like SystemC
is to C++). However, it _ought_ to be compatible.

You can view plain tex and latex files in a text editor, and most of
it is your text, but with tags prefixed with a '\' (and sometimes with
curly braces in them if the 'tag' is a function).

It should be that you can just send him the plain tex source, and
he'll be able to 'compile' it into a dvi or pdf. If your friend is
on Windows,
then it may be a line-endings issue - MS Wordpad can cope (just), but
Notepad can't (or you can just use Zap/StrongED to convert the
line-endings to DOS)

Unfortunately, from my experience, the output from Techwrite in TeX
format is pretty nasty, and you wouldn't want to edit it. It may be
better to pick up a book on LaTeX, and learn how to use it (Leslie
Lamport's one is good, and ought to be widely available)."

I have no doubt that we will get flamed for talking about this on the
Iyonix support board, but (a) it's always a good starting point
because it's often not clear if it's an Iyonix problem or not, (b) I'm
not aware of a Tex / Latex / RISC OS board, and (c) I value being
helpful above being a slave to the rules.
