I occasionally get freezes on boot from cold and (predictably) when 
doing very intensive disk operations such as backups.  I found in the 
past that moving the computer improved the temperature sensitivity.  
My view is that it relates to the extreme sensitivity of the 
motherboard to slightly lower voltages from the PSU (which ARE well 
within the ATX PSU spec).  My guess is that low component temperatures 
affect the available voltage.  Presumably also intensive disk 
operations can do so.
