This is only for information. Perhaps it might help other users
to cope better with similar problems.
Last weekend I decided to upgrade my Iyonix from 128 MB to 512 MB
to cope better with picture handling. Unfortunately I found no 512 MB
RAM at my preferred local dealer. I wanted to be able to return the
RAM in case that it shouldn't work. Only a 1GB RAM was available and
I bought it.
After insertion everything went well. But then lots of silly effects occured.
I searched a lot sometimes the machine worked fine for hours, sometimes it
crashed whilst starting the desktop. I removed nearly every program the
effect stayed. Ok I often heared that some software had problems with one 1
GB.
Frustrated I returned the RAM to the dealer and got my money back without
problems. Now I went from computer dealer to dealer in the town. All the same
only 1 GB RAMs available. At last I found one dealer which offered also some
512 MB RAMs and allowed me to return the RAM in case that it shouldn't work.
I fitted the 512 MB RAM into my Iyonix and yes it hang up during the boot
sequence. I didn't expect this. For I had changed DALimit during the 1GB
tests and forgot to set it back and I don't wanted to fit the 128 MB RAM
again I played around with shift boot. Suddenly it work for one time and
afterwards not in spite of correction of DALimit. However suddenly it seemed
that the problem was one of the contacts. I played a bit around and made a
silly detection. The RAM worked without problems in case that my podule
adapter wasn't fitted. If the adapter is fitted the machine hangs. For I
don't have any podule in usage I decided to remove tha adapter permanently.
Now I am satisfied with my new 512 MB RAM.
The question remains what is the reason for this silly behaviour?
Are there electrical (chip drivers to weak?) or speed cycle
problems? Was this the reason for the 1GB RAM problems too?
My 512 MB RAM is an ELIXIR 400 Mhz.
