Yes, this is indeed broken in Paint 1.96. If the sprite has a mask 
then the exported block is fully masked. The pixels are there though, 
you only need to load the exported sprite into Paint and choose "Edit 
=> Mask" to switch the mask off, which reveals the correct block.

Speaking of broken utilities: ChangeFSI 1.21 (the version supplied 
with RISC OS 5) is broken in that it does not create 256 colour 
greyscale sprites. If I feed it a 16M colour sprite and choose 256 
colour monochrome output (shown as mode 28 in the dialogue box) it 
always creates a 16 colour (mode 27) sprite.

I found out because I tried to create a 256 greyscale test sprite for 
the original problem report using ChangeFSI from a 16M colour sprite 
exported from ArtWorks - after ArtWorks had failed to export a 256 
colour greyscale sprite itself. :-(

I eventually managed to convert the 16M colour sprite to 256 greys 
using InterGIF 6.15.
