Hi again all, I am looking for some people who would like to test drive my Soundblaster Live driver port. Suitable cards are restricted to the Soundblaster Live 5.1 (I have tested one) and the original Audigy (the driver supposedly works with them). They should be pretty cheap by now. It should also work with the original Soundblaster Live card for anyone brave enough to cut an extra slot into the card. Currently the driver is a command line app that will play any 16 bit stereo wave file, although a SoundDMA replacement module is in the works, thanks to some help from Adrian Lees. This will allow the Soundblaster Live card to act as a replacement for the motherboard's audio chip. Why use a sound card if the machine already has sound? Some of you already know the answer - sound quality, above everything else. The difference on even a cheap pair of headphones between the system audio and the Soundblaster Live card is like night and day. BTW, the driver currently uses video RAM as a DMA buffer, and I am still looking for a solution so I can use system RAM. There are some sound cards that have onboard RAM, but these are pretty pricey. It seems the line breaks in my last email were removed - I'll try posting again from a different browser, but if it happens again, I'll stop using Hotmail.
