Thanks for the advice.

The problem was down to the front audio connector being incompatable 
with the Iyonix motherboard.

I disconnected the front audio connector and plugged the monitor 
speakers into the rear audio out connector.  Everything sounded OK.

I examined the connector for the front audio ports and found it was 
wired differently to how the motherboard expected it.  Pin 2 
(Headphone left) had a link to pin 1 (Ground) and pin 6 (Headphone 
right) had a link to pin 5 (Ground).  I removed the two links and 
tested the front headphone port.  All seemed OK.  I just need to check 
audio in now.

I can't understand why the front audio connector was wired like it 
was.  I'm sure the pin configuration for front audio is the same on a 
PC as it is on an Iyonix.
