As my machine produces pyjamas only on a cold start, my assumption has
always been that the OS doesn't wait long enough for the graphics card to
start up, or the card fails to start from cold (sometimes). I don't
remember a push of the reset button ever failing to (re-)start the
machine properly, though YMMV.

Maybe 5.12 adds a longer wait somewhere. Perhaps RISC OS currently boots
too quickly for some PC components.  ;-)
