I had similar symptoms last year. I made the fault and bought myself
a second hardsic for backup purposes. It was a Seagate Barracuda.
Unfortunately it was a 7200 rpm disc. Fast, hot and bad. First I had a
curious smell of burned electronic one warm day and then the locks
occurred again and again.
I thought of the PSU and measured. But it was ok. Next I thought of
USB problems. Of course I excluded the hard disc for it was so new.
But it was broken. I replaced it by a Samsung meanwhile which doesn't
caused any trouble until now. Some week agao my good old original Maxtor
harddisc began to fail. But what a difference compared to the Seagate!
It died slowly. It had problems at spin up and afterwards it started slowly
but at the end it always found back to old speed. So I was able to
save all the data (Yes the Iyonix works fine with three drives connected to
it!). I replaced it by a Western Digital. And yes downwards to the discs I
installed a big fan now (which doesn't seems to make much noise). No problems
until now!
Best Regards
