It sounds suspiciously like the symptoms I experienced recently. I
had all yours, but also the network interface went AWL as well (i.e.
the status led on the router was not lit, although it sometimes came
back after a power down/up) in the later stages. Debatching large
newsgroup fetches also sometimes led to apparent multiple disc errors
on the hard drive, which I never tried to fix, since a power down/up
usually restored the hard drive to 'normal'.

I replaced my PSU and the machine now seems fine.

Give John Balance a call and talk through your symptoms - he was very
helpful with me, even although I interrupted him during his
preparations for a weekend barbecue.
