[iyonix-support] PCI or not PCI

PCI or not PCI? That is the question

At least the question is more like: Are there different
versions of PCI expansion slots and cards that fit them? I do not mean
PCI-e. At least I am fairly sure I do not. That seems quite a bit
different.

I have put up an hasty HTML page with illustrations to help explain this issue.
http://www.mcelroy.com.au/iyonix/

After upgrading to RISC OS 5.12\5·13 I went looking for a new PCI
graphics card. I discovered that in Australia by the time 5.12 had been
produced that no-one had make\imported the FX series for about 18 months
as it was 'out-dated'. After having several firms digging on back
shelves and in warehouses I eventually bought a simple, but effective,
128MB card branded XFX. (See Figure 1) It lacked the DVI out I had
sought, but it works well.

The Iyonix PCI expansion slots are shown in Figure 2. Note the match
between the notches and the slots.

So what is the problem? I hear the reader ask.

Still seeking a DVI outlet I found another card with what seemed good
specifications. It was advertised as being: GeForce RX5500 256MB 128bit
DDR PCI DVI TV-out Heatsink (inter alia). I asked questions of
retailers. I checked the manufacturer's site. viz:
http://www.inno3d.com/products/graphic_card/gf_fx/5500.htm

Among other things, understood or not, it told me:
"A PCI compliant motherboard with full size expension (sic) slot for PCI
version"

I had my current card in one of those (I thought) so I took the plunge
and bought the card shown in Figure 3.

I soon discovered that my shiny new FX550 appeared to be lacking a
notch?

A quick peek in the side of my PC showed that it had a different style
of PCI slot (Figure 4) which would match the new card. The card will not
physically fit the Iyonix.

Two types of PCI expansion slots?

Are there two types of PCI expansion cards? If it is meant to fit the
back notch then the face plate fouls the motherboard.

- Is my new card something different (i.e. not PCI)?

- Is this another case of RISC OS being years behind when it used to be
years ahead?

- Is there a solution to my dilemma or is it a tiny boat anchor?
