Then I replaced the hard drive and all was well. But the ethernet
connection started to give up and I got a digital voltmeter which showed
that the voltage was 5.05 dropping to 5.04. A day or so later it
dropped to 4.85 but everything apart from ethernet still worked.

I put a new power supply in and all was restored, apart from the DVD
drive which I reckon to be duff anyway. But the really curious thing is
that the new power supply shows 5.03 volts.

So ethernet connections depend on another voltage rail and I had not
monitored that. Nor did I have a scope to see if there were any nasties
on the power rail.

Power supplies are cheap enough so it is a fair bet to replace them.
And it does not take long to do.
