Thanks for all the prompt help - several issues are now resolved.

But I still can't get Shift-'switch on' to work, even with all
superfluous peripherals removed, with any USB socket combinations. I'm
worried that I might configure something 'impossible' and won't have
any way out of the mess! Why did it work before I started to use the
computer in earnest? Any further suggestions?

because of all that is happening within USB during boot, you might find that pressing lots of repeated escapes from the point where the numlock light comes on (about reset + 7 secs) until the machine has beeped will achieve the same effect.. i.e. boot without using hard disc based software. (approx 4 out of 5 times)

And I still need a replacement for Attacher - how do other Pluto users
manage?

I'm used to Ctrl-D to insert today's date and Ctrl-S to swap case in
writables - both sorely missed - will IcnClipBrd do these?
