It will always do a double-boot: the softload can't work otherwise.

I've just set it up as per Steve's suggestion (more or less), and it seems
to be fine.  I'll probably re-flash the machine at some point, but then if
the softload works OK I can't see that many downsides to just leaving it
as it is.
