Thanks for everyone's patience. I put NetTime in
!System.310.Modules.Networking and added to the User Options file in
the internet section of the Network part of !Configure, the following
lines:

Set Inet$NTPServer time.cableo1.net
RMEsnure NetTime 0.35 RMLoad System:Modules.Network.NetTime

where time.cableo1.net was the server suggested by David Pitt (thanks
by the way!).

On re-booting the machine I found I had lost my monitor configuration
and was myself in a very low resolution mode. It wasn't the basic
desktop; all my applications had been loaded. Fortunately removing the
lines returned things to normal.

Please forgive me if I am being stupid again, but what could be wrong?
