Thanks Tim - but I don't believe that my problem is hardware related.

After a boot I always get an internet connection. EKInfo shows Link is 
up. - and I can always Ping a numeric internet address.

But - name resolution does not work until I have "kicked" it.

Starting and Quitting NetSurf always does the trick.
And Firefox is not affected by the problem - ie it works after a cold 
boot when NetSurf always fails.

The behaviour is consistent and reproducible which is characteristic 
of a software problem (possibly boot related).

I am considering Doug Webb's suggestion of installing a clean boot.
