Your original question may be about setting up a home network. Paul Vigay
has some help pages on his web site. (Windows, with its plug and play
capabilities, can short cut some of the pain of setting it up.)

Each machine on a network has a unique address, expressed as a set of four
numbers separated by a dot - eg 10.0.0.2; the router also has its own
address. To check that a machine sees another machine, you use a task
window (with RISC OS) and type "Ping 10.0.0.2" followed by Return. You
will then get details of the time taken for each packet to be sent
(confirming that the machines are connected) or else you will be told of
total packet loss.
