I suspect the problem is not the start up button nor the external
temperature. I have found that when the temperature in this room is
lower than normal freezes are much more likely. They seem to be
associated with disc accesses. I've significantly reduced the
incidence of problems by stopping NetFetch auto downloading emails
when it loads. This allows the machine to warm up before significant
disc activity is needed.
