Interestingly, I was getting very slow speeds which turned out to be a
faulty network switch.  It was running rather hot, worked properly for  a
few minutes after being allowed to cool down and then went slow again.  A
new switch cured the problem.  Incidentally it also affected Uniprint -
which was "timing out".
