Could it simply be the contention ratio? Remember that 49 other people 
are potentially using the bandwidth allocated, so from time to time, 
as more of those go online, your share will reduce. AIUI, each packet 
will still travel at (in my case) around 4Mb, but the time between 
packets is extended if others within my group of 50 are on line! These 
speed tests don't seem to measure the speed of each packet, but the 
time it takes to receive them all. So, although it is useful for 'real 
life' speed measurements, the results don't indicate what your 
connection speed is!

Also, if you're measuring speeds from commercial sites, there is very 
likely an inherent delay at the server end, as they are processing 
thousands of requests as well as yours, so are unlikely to respond as 
quickly as the conveying medium will allow, making speed tests like 
that very unreliable.

(Or is that all nonsense? I often seem to have the wrong idea about 
things!)

But from my own tests, it is clear that RISC OS and/or 
Netsurf/Oregano2 consistently shows a speed of around a quarter or 
less of the Mac running Safari. I can't see why any of that difference 
should be down to the connection, so assume it is just the inherently 
slow nature of RO browsers or of RO itself.
