To get a meaningful measure of the difference in down load speeds
between a PC and an Iyonix the tests do need to be as alike as possible,
that is using the same speed tester. That turned out to be difficult
here as the test site I would have most confidence in, PlusNet's beta
test at http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ requires Flash and was not
accessible with Firefox on the Iyonix.
I did a test to PlusNet's old speed tester via the PlusNet portal. This
tool was designed in the days when 2Mb/s was the best on offer and is
not reliable at higher speeds. I tried it anyway.
Sync rate 7630kb/s
PlusNet Portal
Firefox on Iyonix 1815kb/s
Firefox on WindowsXP 4263kb/s
http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/
Firefox on WindowsXP 6282kb/s
The figure reported by Firefox on the Iyonix is rubbish, downloads of
big zips come in at about twice that speed.
To see if the WindowsXP laptop is faster than the Iyonix I downloaded
Netsurf.zip using NetSurf and IE7, which both show the download rate.
Iyonix 336kB/s
WindowsXP 471kB/s
In use I find browsing on the laptop a much slicker experience than with
the Iyonix, and that is not just that the RISC OS browsers are rubbish,
it is faster on the laptop.
That is a five year old Iyonix against a one year old laptop. A modern
laptop with dual core or a hi-spec PC may be better still. Conversely
the Iyonix might hold up well against a similar age laptop.
