The version numbers are maintained by automated scripts for our cvs
repository and the downloads web page version number is extracted
automatically from the zip archive file name, which is created automatically
from the (VersionNum) files in the sources.

So the short answer is that every new release will have an incremented minor
version number (e.g. 1.74 to 1.75) and not any suffix letters/characters
because that would break all of the automation.
