[iyonix-support] It was! Was: Power supply?

This is a feedback and thank-you message after my bout of networking
trouble. The Iyo was intermittently failing to connect to the network,
even sometimes going up and down in the course of the same session.
The majority opinion was that this was likely to be a power-supply
problem; I ordered a new power-supply (he had it in stock!), looked at
all the wiring coming out of it, and promptly lost confidence in my
ability to fit it. I'm grateful that a local RISC OS user (I thought
there weren't any others hereabouts) volunteered to come and do this
for me, in exchange for beer and supper; he knows who he is, and he
was worth his weight in beer :-) The new power-supply was fitted four
days ago, and networking has been solid since. The old one's voltages
were at the bottom end of the acceptable range, but that was when
networking was up, so I suspect that it was dipping in some
circumstances.
It's noticeable that the new fan sounds quite a bit more powerful than
the old one, though whisper-quiet by the standard of the Windows
laptop. Also, the running temperature seems to be quite a bit lower;
I've been used to seeing 28-30C, and it's now mostly 25-26C. My advice
is that the components shouldn't mind a higher temperature, but I
wonder if the killer blow was the very hot days we had a couple of
weeks ago, when the running temperature got to 38C on a few occasions.
Could this perhaps have made a rather ancient power-supply feel not
very well? It was certainly at that time that the trouble started.
Now for something really odd: I have a rather large, regularly used,
Fireworkz32 spreadsheet. This has been occasionally misbehaving
lately, with digits disappearing from the input bar; for instance, I
would try to type 136, the 1 would appear and then immediately
disappear, leaving just the 36. 95% of the time this only affected one
column, but it occasionally happened in other ones too. The really odd
thing is that this seems to have been cured by replacement of the
power-supply! I can't see how this would have happened, but it seems
at least to be a very odd coincidence. Is there an explanation for
this, I wonder? No other apps have had similar problems.
Many thanks to everyone who helped; it was an excellent example of the
collaborative spirit of RISC OS.
With best wishes,
Peter.
