The menu button has nothing to do with what, if anything, is plugged in as a
signal source. It should work, regardless. If it doesn't, you've got a
faulty monitor and you should return it.
Chances are your monitor has a single backlight tube at the bottom of the
screen, which may make it hard to achieve an overall flat brightness.
However it may be that your viewing position isn't helping. Most LCD
monitors are designed for what's called 12 o'clock viewing. This assumes
that your eyeline is level with the top edge of the screen area and that the
screen is then set at 90 degrees to your eyeline. This means you should be
looking slightly down on most of the screen area (particularly the iconbar)
and thus may help to even out the brightness effect.
E.g. with my 17" Samsung monitor I find my eyeline is square with a line
about 2" down from the top of the screen.
