Hi, there has been talk on here recently that some newer chinese models
wont be recognised by Iyonix.
I bought a Seagate 80Gb for my Iyonix a few years ago and took it back
because it was doing a head seeking routine every 5 minutes. There
wasn't anything wrong with the drive, it was just weird hearing it
wearing itself out while it wasn't even getting used.
The Hitachi Deskstar 80Gb I have does the routine every 15 minutes, but
even that is noticeable, particularly since I fitted a variable speed
fan to the main psu.
I noticed the drive you have mentioned has a 2Mb buffer but my Hitachi
has 8Mb.
I have seen other 80Gb drives with only 4Mb but drives over 80Gb usually
have 8Mb buffers I am told.
At the end of the day the performance on the Iyonix is what you need to
know about. I can't give you details in this respect.
The drive you are looking at may be OK, but leave yourself an option to
return it.
Castle were supplying Samsung 80Gb and my next choice would be either a
Samsung or WD. WD 250Gb are $150 and the NZ $ is getting stronger so you
might even do better than that.
At the moment I am considering a SATA drive with an IDE adapter for
backups. The SATA leads could be left protruding for the occasional
backup and the drive's other partitions could be used on an x86 Linux
machine for doing dvcam work.
