It certainly doesn't seem to be a greyscale mode.

It turns out that the error message is that BootSpool is open. Within
BootSpool there is the message: "Repeat: File
'Boot:Choices.Boot.PreDesk.Backup' not found"
I never knew that BootSpool exists and I never noticed a Backup file
in PreDesk. Any idea what it should contain? Would creating a blank
text file called Backup sort this?

What helped was typing Configure MonitorType Auto at the command line
which got me to a usable screen. I've since deleted the !Geminus
module and GemConfig. Attempting to load the correct MDF into the
Screen Configuration window is only partially successful. At the
moment both Mode and WimpMode are configured to Auto.
