and follow up clarification re my description of directories:
------------
Parent.Child was:
ADFS::HardDisc4.$.!BOOT.^.John's.CC.FundingWP
Parent.Sibling was:
ADFS::HardDisc4.$.!BOOT.^.John's.CC.Publications
Both of which are real directories

The error messages in my original post were copied word for word, except
that I used the aliases 'parent.sibling', etc. (When the problem happens
it is completely repeatable until I reboot, so I did things several times
to copy the error messages.)
