You did not mention using the opt command on it, if you 'do' want to
boot from it?

Yes I did make the new disc bootable.

I can still only boot up from my earlier 114gb hdd.
Even a smaller one plugged into the second motherboard socket won't show as harddisc6, as it was for all the last year or so. 

Is it because of all this dust inside?
