Thanks to Ian and Barry for their comments. I found that the USBKick
version that I had just downloaded was 1.04. Now found 1.09, but it still
didn't work. I assumed that there was an internal fault, so disconnected it
and removed the cover and looked hopefully inside. Nothing obviously wrong,
applied power, LED flashed, tube lit, gave a double buzz, then a final buzz
when it had set itself up, then nothing more.

So put the cover back and gave one final check, then the LED flashed orange,
horrible mechanical clunking from inside so hastly powered down. Found the
carriage lock switch at rear was jammed, I'd obviously been careless in
re-assembly, so cover off again, freed plastic slider, power on again but
LED still flashing orange.

Fed up, really done it now, put cover on, with care, put USB lead in, one
final try, still no scanner. Then I clicked on DPlng and ran along the
Preview etc buttons, each brought up the message no scanner, back to
Preview, and surprised to find it worked, but the button showed red while it
was scanning, and then the scan button did the same. Previously they have
been grey when running. They are back to grey now.

So I tried it on the Microsoft PC, loaded the disc, but there was a fault
message, but the disc is for Windows, this is Vista, not that I know
anything about either, so I tried the Epson site and searched around and
found I could download a driver for the 1660 for Vista. The scanner now
works on either.

So I don't know what caused the original fault, I had taken the scanner
right out of the room when I installed the new computer, Maybe I had
dislodged something inside which caused it to jam, and the mechanical
clunking freed it?

 Thanks again, Alec
