It's far, far more likely that your USB system was just on the
edge of working, and some circumstance pushed it just over the
edge.  It would take a lot of detailed knowledge (which I don't
have) of the individual pieces of equipment to confirm or deny
this idea.

The symptoms of early PSU failure are different from what you
have seen.
