Some hubs can work without power as long as only low powered devices
are plugged in to them. Some are not designed to work like this, but
you may happen to get away with it. The keyboard is very low power,
the scanner is self powered, so the highest draw device will be the
optical mouse and most likely to stop working if the hub isn't happy.

Plug the power back in to the hub and don't worry about it unless you
still get problems.
