I wonder what I have done to change the previously stable situation I was
so pleased with. I take it you are also using the "sounddma" module version

I have used a combination of !MusicMan to rip my CDs and imported mp3s from
my Windoze machine. I can't say I have ever experienced any of the sound
effects you mention.

Something I have never heard of. Will investigate.
