Sorry Dave

Disc error 26 is a cable fault

error 23 is more likely related to a psu that is going beyond its best, or a possible dying hdd.

check the psu (see other posts on this) before considering a possible panic.

Two things happened today:

(1) I ordered a second hard disc for the Iyonix.

2) When the machine was switched on, a 'disc error 23' flashed briefly
on the screen, there was an error message that there was no disc
present and a minimal desktop appeared after this was acknowledged.

Disc error 23 is a cable fault, which means the system couldn't find the disc rather than the disc being faulty. I would suggest this could be a power supply issue.

[snip]

I ran DiscKnight - the disc was good.

Incidentally DiscKnight isn't the tool for disc errors, you need to Verify.

Error Tool
----- ----
Disc error at X:YYYYYYYY Verify from drive icon or *Verify
Disc not understood DiscKnight
Broken directory DiscKnight
Map inconsistent DiscKnight

Cheers
