I ran *verify twice in succession.  The first pass verified OK with 7 
retries; the second with 4 retries, all of different sectors and none 
the same as the single sector reported repeatedly by the Errors 13.

Backing up !NewsDir was straightforward so I guess copying is 
different in terms of disc usage to reading individual messages?

So what exactly is a seek error?
