It's secondhand. It hasn't shown any signs of failing, but I was just 
thinking that the sort of insidious failure resulting in corruption of 
the filing system is something I would wish to avoid, if possible.

Agreed. The question, is such an item available. Is the supply a 
standard ATX one, by which I mean does it have the standard ATX 
connectors and voltages? (It's a Panther BTW) If so, then it should be 
possible to find a supply unit better engineered than average, for 
example to the standard of RPC power supplies.
