I think the above means that his dns server is set to something 
outside the LAN? Unusual, normally DHCP from the router would set the 
router as the DNS address. I suspect that is actually what is being 
used.

In which case, he can query a DNS server on the LAN, but not ping the 
resulting off-Lan address. This points to the gateway setting. With 
DHCP it should be left empty in the host names control panel, and 
supplied by DHCP.

The other thing worth checking might be the hosts file - 
Network-Internet-Host Names-hosts file.

It should, in addition to the mandatory loopback entry, have entries 
for any static addresses on the local network. It should NOT have 
entries for DNS servers etc.
