The problem I see with wide screens is that the extra space is largely
wasted especially when doing DTP/Letter writing in the normal Portrait mode.

15" CRTs offer 1024 vertical resolution so 1050 is only a very small
increase.

Decent 17" CRTs offered 1200 vertically

The only reason I've been given for the popularity of Widescreen LCD is the
ability to watch DVD's on them, but I can recall only one person saying they
ever did that!

Also why manufacturers won't produce stand alone LCDs using the high
resolution small panels they fit into laptops has bewildered many people!

Most marketing literature for LCDs focuses on Size not Resolution though
Resolution does seem to be becoming mentioned more frequently. Unfortunately
the general public need educated, many even RISC OS users tell me they don't
know what resolution they are using.

LCDs that can be rotated to work in Portrait mode were rare and are now
almost extinct!

n.b. The good news is that 24" 1920x1200 LCDs are getting cheaper, we are
just about to drop our price!
