I see you are using Pluto.  There was a problem with the speak module in
pluto a few years ago which produced exactly the symptoms you describe. 
Jonathan produced a new module to correct this and I'm sure this code was
amended before the 32bit version of the module was produced so it
shouldn't happen now.  Maybe your speak module is corrupted, I suggest you
ditch it and replace with the most recent 32bit module available from
jonathan's website:  http://home.clara.net/jsd/  upgrade page.
