That is not the error reported if the Desktop file is missing. If the
file is missing then your original error results, this from OS5.13 :-

Error from Boot Run: Internal error: abort on data transfer at &FC117984

*where
Address FC117984 is at offset 00000630 in module MessageTrans


An empty Desktop file of type desktop, for example, does give the error
:-

Error from Boot Run: 'ADFS::Iyonix4.$.!Boot.Choices.Boot.Desktop' does not 
appear to be suitably structured

A properly structured default is to to be found at :-

!Boot.RO500Hook.Boot.Desktop
