The more common cause of problems like yours is a power supply that is
no longer supplying quite the right voltages. When I had such problems
I was lent a digital voltmenter and it showed some problems on the 5
volt rail and I think there were also problems on the 12v one. It is
said that the 5 v should be 5.06 but the new supply here consistently
read 5.04 and all is totally well; I think the figure for the 12v rail
also needs defining. Mind you the digital voltmeter might have been
inaccurate.
