Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in "Environmental planning and restoration in
the drylands of Latin America"
ReForLan project
ReForLan (Restoration of forest landscapes for biodiversity conservation and
rural development in the drylands of Latin America) is a research project
funded by the European Commission (International Cooperation Specific Measures,
INCO/DEV). It aims to identify and promote approaches for the sustainable
management of dryland forest ecosystems. It is based on a programme of
multi-disciplinary research analyzing how restoration of degraded lands can be
achieved in a way that mitigates the effects of unsustainable land use
practices, contributes to conservation of biodiversity, and supports the
development of rural livelihoods.
The project focuses on achieving a strong link between technological,
management and policy research. ReForLan is a network of ten research
institutions in Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Spain, U.K., and Italy.

Vacancy
Within ReForLan there is a vacancy at the University of Trento, Department of
Civil and Environmental Engineering (http://www.ing.unitn.it/dica/eng) for a
Postdoctoral fellow. This position is available for a total period of 2 years
(full-time), with intermediate assessment moments. The preferred starting date
is September 2007.
Research topic
The research aims at developing and testing approaches to restore degraded
drylands that benefit both local communities and the natural world. Emphasis
will be given to the interaction between biophysical parameters, socio-economic
variables and natural resources exploitation patterns. The study will entail
the following stages:
- Analysis of the relationship between drylands degradation and
livelihood systems;
- Stakeholder and local community consultation;
- Identification of priority areas for ecosystem restoration
interventions;
- Setting-up of decision support tools;
- Application to one or more case study areas in Mexico, Chile and
Argentina.
Required: Ph.D. in environmental sciences/planning/engineering (or related
topics), affinity to interdisciplinary research, good GIS skills. Further
requirements: Good publication record on relevant topics, affinity to
participatory appraisal techniques, knowledge of multicriteria analysis and
decision support tools.
