publish exchange server

This is my first post to this listserve so I apologize if this question
has been answered already. Current setup: ISA/2000 server and one internal
2000 server running exchange 2000. I ran the mail publishing wizard on ISA
so we could send and receive mail to our internal exchange server. Before
making any dns changes at our isp, I wanted to test if mail could be
received properly. When working with proxy server in the past, I have
always been able to telnet into port 25 on the outsite nic and receive the
microsoft exchange smtp banner. However, when I now attempt to connect via
telnet port 25 on our isa server, I get a connection for 10 seconds and
then get a message that the connection to the host has been lost. Is this
what's supposed to happen with ISA? thanks for ideas in advance
