No my internal users use the internal mail server to send emails out. The
IIS SMTP is used for SMTP filters. The IIS SMTP passes all incoming emails to
our internal mail server once they have been processed by the SMTP filter.

If the incoming email can not be processed. IE- bad user name, failed the
SMTP filter test.... The NDR does not get delivered to the sending SMTP server
nor does it go the postmaster of the receiving mail server (postmaster@mydomain)

Before I implemented SMTP filtering and IIS SMTP my internal mail server
would do just fine with handing out NDR's. Now with IIS SMTP those NDR's just
pile up in my badmail directory and I've got to manually purge them everyday.

So you are using both exchange and IIS smtp service to send mail.

My problem is that my internal mail server sends mail out just fine.
It's the IIS SMTP server that is having problems. In particular the bad emails.
IIS SMTP seems to not send out the undeliverable reports. They are all stacking
up in the badmail directory.

            Per your request:
            p. 662 states in the "Note" that TCP-53 is required for Exchange
and IIS SMTP services to send to the Internet. This is because they use that
for MX record lookups.
I have personally verified this with packet traces. IIS and
Exchange SMTP do indeed use TCP-53 as well as UDP-53 to perform MX record
lookups.

I had ISA working with Exchange 2000 just fine, and now,
incoming mail is working, but out-going is not. Any suggestions on where to
look first to troubleshoot? We did run the mail wizard, and after that all was
working. I am not sure what we changed to tie things up.

I have Toms book, so if there are specific pages to reference me
to, that would be great.
