Hi David, You should qualify for an upgrade from 3 to 4. Its worth it if you're doing a lot of work with Win2003. There are also some cool new features, like shared folders that are accessible between all VMs and the host OS, and "on the fly" changing of the VMnets. With Windows 2003 released version had a few unexpected crashes with version 3. Thanks again! -----Original Message----- From: Thomas W Shinder [mailto:tshinder@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Saturday, May 17, 2003 11:40 AM To: [ISAserver.org Discussion List] Subject: [isalist] RE: WS03, ISA, and VMWare3.0 http://www.ISAserver.org Hi David, No problems with Version 3 or Version 4, *except* you should remove the USB virtual controller from the VM before installing. Also, if you upgrade to version 4 and you have a bunch of version 3 images that you're using, plug and play on the images may lead to some interesting experiences :-) You might want to recreate your images in version 4. Also, there is a small bug with version 4 that forgets to add a link in the config file to support the floppy disk, so you need to add that manaully. Otherwise, I think version 4 is a lot more stable. Make sure you disable all the VMware services in the Services applet, and that you disable the virtual interfaces in the Network and Dial-up Connections window, unless you need to use those (I've never needed to use those interfaces in any of my test labs, so I always disable them). Disabling the services and the interfaces will help you avoid more "interesting experiences" ;-) However, if you need them, don't disable them! I think VMware is miraculous! It removes all excuses for not testing our your configs before moving them into production. I would consider it clear evidence of lack of "due diligence" not to test everything in a VMware lab before implementing it (or a physical lab if you've recently won the lottery :) ).
