Why do you keep using the word "free?" People pay for SA; nothing's free.

It's the "active SA" part that I'm trying to make clear.
I've had discussions with several customers that think SA for one product
morphs into another automagically.

FWIW, I've pinged the licensing folks.
They're the ones that have been saying "free upgrade from ISA 2006 only".

It wouldn't be the first time a web page was "mistaken".

I have to concur with Steve... So long as you have an "active SA" for a
product line, then you're eligible to upgrade to the latest version of the
product. As soon as your SA is not renewed (becomes inactive), then you lose
your upgrade rights.

So, if you had an active SA on ISA 2006, but that SA expires and is not renewed
prior to TMG release, then you're not entitled to TMG. If you have an active
SA for ISA at TMG's release, and you're still (for some god awful reason)
running ISA 2000, you still have a valid license to TMG...

Since an active SA also grants product downgrade rights, I don't see why MS
would care whether a company is running ISA 2004 or 2006... So long as the SA
is active. (which means Microsoft is getting their money!)

Now, there's of course a question on whether you need to exercise the SA right
to upgrade before the SA expires (should you decided to let an SA expire). But
that's a whole other topic for another day.

Nah, Jim's just wrong this time. I've never had to do that for any of my
clients & one of them has just went from win2k to win2008 on SA

I would like to find out more about the "exercising your SA" thing, we've
maintained Software Assurance on all of our server products for about 10 years
now and I've never heard that term before. Possibly this is something that our
reseller does automatically for us?

He is not correct tho'

According to Tim & MS

If my organization has Software Assurance, can we upgrade to the new version of
any product?
You may upgrade to the latest version of any underlying licensed product for
which you have Software Assurance coverage.

No; SA gets you the "next revision"; not "the next convenient revision".
If you don't exercise your 2004 SA to upgrade to ISA 2006, you don't' get to
upgrade to TMG.

It's really a matter of whether you have excerised your SA rights yet or not.
If not, why haven't you?

Jim,

I don't understand this:

ISA 2006 SA will get them an upgrade to TMG.
ISA 2004 SA will not.

ISA SA is ISA SA... I've never seen a distinction for SA for ISA 2004 vs SA
for ISA 2006... If the SA is active / up-to-date, then you've got SA for the
ISA product line. As TMG is the next "version" of ISA, then any active ISA SA
should get you the upgrade... Or am I missing something?

TMG will release by the end of this year, which will also be about 90 days
before it goes "GA" (Generally Available).
ISA 2006 SA will get them an upgrade to TMG.
ISA 2004 SA will not.
TMG MBE does not have SA, so who cares?

Seriously - do you really think anyone with an NDA is going to break it in a
public forum by giving vague suggestions as to a release date other than what's
been publicly stated?
Your nail-biting customers are in no worse position than any other ISA
customer. Those who have "moved on cuz we can't wait" will regret that
decision, but hey - it's their decision to make...

Patience, (gr)asshopper - all good things in their own time. :)

Hi All,
Now I know that those in the know are restricted by NDR's and other constraints
but if I were to guess at there being a RC release Oct/Nov with the product
being released to the public by Feb 2010, would it be a close guess?

Been getting a lot of pressure from clients about when is TMG going to be
available. They are some who have moved to other products already but I still
have some hanging on as they have SA on the product.

Thanks

Andy
