From my experience -
Toshiba are very proprietary and heavy. I have three here with cracked
screens and burned out mice. Engineer here requested a Toshiba and it suct,
we returned it for a ThinkPad.
Older Dell's break easily. I have a brand new Latitude that is very nice.
Dell support is #1.
IBM Thinkpads have been very reliable and the support is incredibly good. My
previous job I managed 200 Thinkpads and calling IBM was always a good
experience. The recovery disks rock when u need um, and they are easy to
ghost.
Compaq Laptops and consumer PCs suck. But their servers are the greatest
machines on the planet.
My 2 cents.

re: Toshiba laptops for a sysadmin - agreed. We use Toshiba laptops
exclusively. (Also Compaq servers and Dell desktops for what that's worth).
